I love garages! So I’m starting with that! It may not be the prettiest place in the house, but lots of pretty stuff can get made in the garage!

ScreenHunter 02 Apr. 29 10I think these chalkboard paint cabinets are kind of cool! Look at how they let you easily indicate what’s in a drawer! I could use this to help me clean-up! It might help! Maybe…

Martha Knows Best

Martha Stewart is so creative! I want to be like Martha. Sort of. In some ways.

Look what she did with these pots! I know it’s not technically remodeling, but I like to use term in the broad sense!

And that’s not all! She also was the first person I ever saw use custom color chalkboard paint! I’ve seen it since, but she broke the story!

How About A Chalk-Door?

I fell in love with what Melaine, over at My Sweet Savannah did in her kitchen the first time I saw it! Look:

And she’s not done with the chalkboard paint yet! She’s got some plans for this weekend that I’m sure she’ll be showing-off soon!

Melaine was so inspired by the Beam Me Up post over at RG:Lite that she’s got me designing some beams for her kitchen ceiling! Hopefully, we’ll get to that next week too!

Make Your Own Chalkboard Paint

In my searching around, I came across some simple instructions for making chalkboard paint. According to the folks at Lowe’s, you can make it out of any regular latex paint…

I love chalk board paint. I just haven’t tried it yet. At our new house I’ve scoped out possibilities but didn’t come up with anything, too much texture on walls and doors with too much going on and not enough flat space. I’ll find something though.

Ohhhh, I love me some chalkboard paint! I’ve used it on the backs of the doors in my kids’ bedrooms. I also used it on the backing to a frame after the mirror that was in the frame broke. Love love love it!!!

Okay, love this idea! Does the mix your own really work well? Has anyone tried it? I would like to take it one step further and figure out a way to make the chalkboards so magnet will stick to them. Is that possible?

There is a magnetic paint available! But I’m not sure that it would work well as a chalkboard, and I hear that it’s not very “sticky” for the magnets, presumably because it’s so thin.

Your best bet, and I think this would be really cool!, is to take a sheet of sheet metal and paint it with chalkboard paint. Then you’d have a magnet/chalk board that you could incorporate into your design.

I’ve bought small sheet metal at Northern Tool and Supply before.

I think I’ll want to try this! We love magnets!

Hey, I’ve done the magnet paint with chalkboard paint ontop. I had a wall in my back hallway for a year. I painted 6 coats of magnet paint and then found out that you have to special order these science magnets to make anything stick to it. So, I did that….they are dangerous though for little kids b/c of the risk of swallowing. I would magnet all the kids art work from school up there and write notes on the chalkboard part. I loved it for a year and then I was over the chalkboard part b/c of the dust so I painted over it to match the paint again. I still have the magnet…I guess it will be there forever…so I still can magnet things to the wall which I still do.

Anyway, hope that helps you out.

I really miss my chalkboard door! I will definitely be using chalkboard paint in my new house! I tried the magnet paint but didn’t have any luck getting magnets to work. :-)

I’ve been using quite a bit of chalkboard paint in my new old house (I’ve shared a little bit on my blog) and it’s a lot of fun, plus it’s free entertainment for my teenage daughter and you can’t beat that LOL

I’ll have to show that garage to my husband. He loves organization ;)

Oh and your blog has been a great help to us, so thank you!

Thanks for this post! I just bought an old chalkboard that is scratched up and wanted to refinish it, so now I have more ideas.

I have a chalkboard area between too very tall windows in my dining room. I use it to write the menu on, when I have people over…When I don’t have anything special to write, I just have a generic Happy Holidays, Happy Spring, or GO S.U.! type of message on there. :) I really love it. It’s a fun thing to have!!

I was actually thinking of using chalkboard paint on some planters because I like the finish! I was going to then rub chalk over the raised parts to highlight them. Then to finish, I’ll spray them with polyurethane (matte) to protect them!

Love that potting planter idea! So cute!

I too have painted my own metal chalkboard but the metal fragments simply were too few and far between to be very effective. Painted metal as Tim suggests is the way to go.

Now if they’d just invent a dustless chalk…

I love the “look” of the chalkboard paint on the plants but I knew with all the “help” I receive watering the chalk would wash right off…so what does a martha want to be do — I used regular black paint on my pots and wrote in white paint pen, so that I got the durability I could live with but the “look” I was after.

I tried covering a metal sheet with the make your own chalkboard paint. It worked, however, when you use the chalk to write it scrapes off the paint since it is hard to get it to cling to the metal sheet. Gotta be a better way just havent found it yet.

This is a fabulous idea — I’ve been wondering what to do for the kids’ rooms — esp. the one that likes to draw *all* the time! This is perfect for her.
