We lived in a 950 sq. ft home for 17 years. When we moved to a larger home, my boys were 16, 14, and 10. Prior to that, they all shared a room. I have the same fond memories/reasons of all the great aspects that you enjoy about your home. The biggest draw back for me in this home (2000 sf) is that every body goes to their own room. I miss my boys!
Continue to embrace the small : )

My family also lives in a small house. It is about 800 square feet, it is an historic home and I love it! The biggest problem for me is the lack of storage. Our kids share a bedroom (boy and girl) that is about 8 x 10. We have 10 foot ceilings so there is a lot of unused wall space (especially in their room). I was wondering if you have some suggestions on how to maximize wall space and use it for storage without feeling cluttered or closed in. Right now the tallest thing in the room is probably at the 5 foot level so there is lots of wall space.
Thanks!!

I completely agree with and love this post! I grew up 1 of 4 girls and always had to share a room with my younger sister. Now that we have families of our own, we have totally outgrown the living room at my parents' house, but we still cram ourselves in there. We would rather be all together and smooshed than not together. I will always cherish the memories of being in a small house where you meet one another in hallways, have to wait on the bathroom, and where you know someone will always be near when you need help.

Thanks for the reminder!

Tim, I sure loved this little ditty and really appreciate the timing. It is so easy to get caught up in the 'I wants' and 'must haves.' This reminder is helping me to just be content and realize my blessings...but of course keep dreaming of the little things (and inexpensive things) I can do to improve our family's lifestyle and enable our home to serve us and our daily lives more efficiently. Hey, I didn't know you home schooled your kiddos. So do we...but it is a year-by-year decision if you know what I mean. It is so great having them around and being able to do those life lessons when they pop up. Anyhow, thanks again for your insights and great inspirations. Your site is really informative and fun!
Sincerely,
Christina

We (1 year old, 3 year old, 5 year old, 2 cats, mom and dad) spent 7 months is a 600 sq ft.m 2br while our real house grew from about 1200 to 2200. I have only one bad memory - living closer that we wanted to the cat liter. Anyway we got along fine. Families are fun. Those kids got really big though and we enjoyed a bit more breathing room.

Thank you so much for the reminder! My kids share rooms - 2 girls and 2 boys. Most of the time I want a bigger house - well all the time. This was a great reminder of the closeness a smaller house brings!

Love this post! I think there are more advantages to a small house than a big one!

Love this post and love living in a small(ish) space. I've lived in a number of houses and think that a great floorplan is crucial to making any house pleasant - and especially a small one.

Would love for you to share floorplan ideas - what you have found works well, or what doesn't. Thanks!

Yay for small spaces! I love my small apartment. It works so much better than a large or medium size house. I don't like wasted space, especially when all you do is walk through it or by it to get where you need to go!

We live in a 1200 sq ft home. By most standards it is small, but I think most Americans have gotten out of hand in their definitions of how much space is necessary. In my husband's home country (Mexico) his family fits eight people in a home not much bigger than our living room and kitchen combined!

Our kids all share a room and will continue to share until our daughter gets too old and needs her own room. My husband and I took the smaller bedroom and let the kids have the larger master .

RG, I agree with you...it is nice to know what is going on with other members of the household. My sister had a friend in grade school whose father was a basketball star. Their house was ENORMOUS and you could literally walk around for hours and not meet anyone! I got lost one time visiting...lol! I like being able to hear my kids play and know what is going on with them and how they are treating each other.

And I second the love of not having so much house to clean! :)

Blessings and Happy Easter...He is risen!
