Colorful Kitchens – Still My Dream

by Tim Layton

in Cabinet Painting,Kitchens,Painting,Trends

I just can’t get enough of these colorful kitchens! I wrote apost just over a year ago with one that is still my favorite. That post was titled: Colors in Cabinetry — A New Trend? If it wasn’t already a major trend then, it certainly is now! And I’m one person who is happy, happy, happy about it!

Red and white cabinets look great!

bhg.com

The photo above has one thing in common with the one from last year that I think is really a key to pulling this look off:

Color on bottom — White on top!

Using white on the upper cabinet really serves to brighten the look. If the top half of the room had the darker colors, it wouldn’t work the same way. If they were actually reversed, and the white was on bottom, I think it would be a disaster!

Color On All The Cabinets

Beautifully detailed pale yellow kitchen!

This look, where color is used on all of the cabinets is also beautiful in the right color and can work in a wider range of overall decor. The kind of detail and quality in these particular cabinets doesn’t hurt either.

Any thoughts? I’d love to hear your opinion on color in cabinetry or your favorite details in these pictures. It helps me know how your mind works! Thanks!

It’s still my favorite too! Totally still my plan for my house! Here is the link: http://www.remodelingguy.net/2009/01/colors-in-cabinetry-a-new-trend/

If you like that second picture, Melissa has another take on the same shot (posted simultaneously without collaboration, on her blog) http://theinspiredroom.net/2010/02/11/beautiful-yellow-wood-walls-and-kitchen/

I love the red… And just recently looked back at the first post you did on color used like this. I was thinking of doing this on our cabinets… Any suggestions on what that shade of red is?

Every day as I work with clients the one theme they ask over and over is exactly YOUR topic!

I am loving it — it actually reminds me of my grandmothers kichen long ago… I remember when she sanded and sanded to repaint… boy those were long hot sweaty days… but GREAT memories.

Thanks!

Hey Tim! If you remember, I painted my top cabinets white and the bottoms green…and I love them! All white would have been too bland for the color woman in me. Good to “see” you again! I thought you had closed the blog? Have a great weekend~

I love those yellow cabinets. You need to check out twiceremembered.blogspot.com. She (Kim) has red cabinets all over her kitchen and it looks incredible! Color where you don’t usually find it, is a lot of fun. A couple of years ago I lived in a house with a huge kitchen and I painted the cabinets a warm shade of green.

Hmmm…

The color I would have chosen probably would have matched the walls. However, I don’t hate the contrast color. I feel it might be a tad bit dark though. But that’s just my preference I think.

That second kitchen is gorgeous.

I’m loving this too. I am just struggling with painting my lovely hickory cabinets. My husband might divorce me. That’s probably not a good option. ;)

Nice inspiration.

I’m contemplating dark bottom cabinets with antique white wall cabinets and a mixture of butchers block and granite in our new kitchen. Probably with some stainless steel shelving thrown in for good measure.

I’m excited about trying to mix it up! It’s usually maple pumpkin color stained cabinets and emerald pearl granite for me, or something similar…

I WISH my clients would let me paint their cabinets. I did just have a client let me do her island in turquoise. The link to just a door is here:

I love color so I love all your pics!

Thanks to all for the comments! I’m off to look at some of the pictures and links you gave me.

Jenni – The red looks a whole lot like a color we’ve used from Ralph Lauren called Lattice Red. Ralph is hard to find at Home Depot, but you can still get it at ICI paint stores, or so I’m told.

I just painted my kitchen yellow – bright yellow – as in I walk into the kitchen and think, “Wait! When did the sun come out? Oh yeah. It’s just the walls. Yay!!” I’m going to accent with red, orange and maybe a bit of green. And part of my inspiration was the first pic you posted last time, like the previous commenter said. So pretty.

Tim I came here via The Inspired Room. I just thought it was so sweet that you were considering not using the same pict as Melissa. It happens all the time. We write a post that we think is such an original idea and voila we travel around blog land and realize others were on the same wave link. I did a yellow post today also. It is on the lines of fashion but still Yellow.Like you said great minds and all. I am with you on colored cabinets and I painted mine a depression -era green as a fix it until I could totally re-do my kitchen. well 7 yrs later and I still have the green cupboard and would never change them. I was so pleased I took the plunge. You can see them here if you would like. I first posted it on RMS
http://www.roomzaar.com/rate-my-space/Kitchens/1970s-update/detail.esi?oid=513585
I also have it on my blog but not a good picture of the cupboards. Love your blog and will be visiting again, Have a great weekend,Kathysue

Now I am definitely hedging on painting all my cabinets off-white! I’ve been going back and forth with cabinet and (beadboard) backsplash colors. I recently finished a grassy green island and I have sunny yellow walls. Not sure if I should throw more into the mix! Thanks for all the ideas. To answer your question, I think the yellow color of the cabinets and the beadboard backsplash are my favorite parts of the pictures you posted.

I love the concept of colored cabinets…but I’m always so risk adverse to color that I think I would be too scared to actually put color on my cabinets. The kitchen is such a big investment; I would be too scared that I would end up hating it 5 years down the road. But to those of you who are bold enough to do it – more power to you!

I agree with you about painted kitchen cabinets. I live in an old house (1913). I painted my kitchen cabinets blue about 10 years ago. I also took the doors off the cabinet over the stove and just have open shelves. When I transformed the look of my kitchen everyone said it was a bold move. I still love the look of it. Julia Child had blue cabinets in her kitchen too. If you have not seen photos of it you can visit the replica of her kitchen at the Smithsonian.

Glad I found your blog!

Love,
Susan and Bentley
