May Newsletter

Hello Crew!
Welcome to the May issue of the Remodeling Guy Newsletter!  If you happen to be a mom, please allow me the honor of wishing you a Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you have (or had) a day filled with pampering, good times, and some well deserved relaxation! You earned it!

Many readers of the Remodeling Guy blog and Newsletter are mom’s.  That’s because mom’s are the ones constantly thinking about the house itself.  What does it need? What could it use?  I’m not trying to stereotype anyone, so no getting mad at me!  I’m just saying that I admire the time you put into the thoughtful preparation of your home environment.

I’ve realized more and more that many of you would really appreciate some in-depth teaching on skills.  I tried to avoid that at first because I was afraid that teaching posts would be boring and because I knew they would be hard to do.  But I realize that there is a need and I’m going to try and fill it.  This month’s newsletter starts by getting you motivated about skills in general, then dealing with our first skill: Carpentry.

There will be more carpentry teaching for the next month online at Remodeling Guy  See you there!

Feel free to forward this newsletter with my thanks!  Not a subscriber?  Subscribe here!

DIY Survival Skills
What would you do differently if you had skills? I’m talking "work around the house" skills here. I’m talking about carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, drywall, and the like. And I’m talking about real, solid, skills you can count on; skills you trust.

Even if you already have expertise in some areas, I know there are some skills that you don’t have; some you want.

It’s like the life-path-planning question "what would you do if you couldn’t fail?" I’ve just brought that down to a more manageable ‘Remodeling Guy" level. Yet the question remains… what would you do differently if you had those home-improvement skills? AND you knew that any work you set your mind to would happen. For sure.

I hope you’re saying "a lot!" I hope you’re one of the millions of people who are taking a hard look at how much we count on the skills of others to do things for us. Maybe you’re among those who are considering growing vegetables at home, or maybe you’re making your own soaps, clothes, art, whatever!

If you are, then I know that your heart beats a little faster when you think about the "what if" potential of having construction skills.

I wonder what kind of list you might have. Maybe it includes some of these little items:
  • Repair the rotten wood outside
  • Fix the broken window
  • Replace the ceiling fan in bedroom #3
  • Build bedroom #3
  • Fix the stupid toilet that always runs
  • Replace the stupid toilet
  • Tear-out and replace the 30-year old vanity in the bathroom
  • Paint, well, everything
  • Put a new roof on the house
  • Add a bathroom
Some of the items I listed are simple, and some aren’t. Most people wouldn’t even consider putting a new roof on their own house. And adding a bathroom just sounds nuts. Why? It’s not rocket science. What’s holding you back?

Maybe you’ve heard the saying "You don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step." I love that saying. Like most great sayings, it’s true.

Pick one skill and learn it. Exercise it. Your life will be better for it in more ways than one!
Building Shutters!
If you were able to join-in or see the post for last week’s Remodeling Guy Round-Up (thanks to all for a great turn-out) then you know that I built some shutters.  Some tropical, islandy shutters.

It might have been obvious from a previous post that I had been influenced by a trip we took to the beautiful Florida Keys!  I had never seen shutters on the sides of a doorway, at least not that I recall.

Influenced as I was, it wasn’t long before we were building some Island Style shutters at our house!

Projects like this are great for learning your carpentry skills because outdoor work is often a little more flexible when it comes to the standard of perfection!

I took plenty of pictures as I did this work, even when I spilled a whole gallon of paint!  It’s worth the click over just to see that! ;-)

In the tutorial, I get into a number of carpentry skills:
  • selecting lumber
  • using a miter saw
  • using a router
  • using a jigsaw
  • attaching to concrete

Outdoor Carpentry Ideas Galore!

I love this book!  We’ve had this book for about a few months and it’s jus tone of those books you look at again, and again, and again!  In fact, all of the Taunton Idea Books are like that!  I just picked up a new one a few days ago… don’t laugh… The Decorating Idea Book!

The Mom’s in My World…

My Mom…

My mom is amazing!  She’s truly one-of-a-kind!  Here is her blog:

Mom has known me longer than anyone and she’s been there for me every day since she was just a kid herself!  If the fact that she was able to survive raising me isn’t enough proof of her greatness, she is also the mother of two other amazing Layton kids, and the grandmother of five (I think… my brother and his wife have kids so fast you never know)

She’s an author, speaker, and the founder of A Woman’s Place Ministries.
Happy Mothers Day Mom!  (don’t miss her blog because it tells you about my Grandma!)

My Amazing, Beautiful, Incredible Wife…

I really never knew what being a MOM was all about until I saw it up-close and personal !  My computer can’t print enough words to describe how truly spectacular my wife is!  She is a perfect mother and an even better wife.
She homeshools our two sons, takes great care of me (which really isn’t so simple), and still finds time to make beautiful Hair Accessories for little girls which she sells on Etsy and to run a busy blog all about Etsy!

You might love her hair accessories on Etsy.

Happy Mother’s Day Princess!
Forever…Wherever!
 What’s New!
I’m always doing something to the Blog!  Have you seen the latest?

You’re really going to want to check this out!  It’s only been up and running for a couple of days now and has already shown that this is going to be one of the most popular of the Remodeling Guy web resources.

Not only are there forums for every imaginable home improvement topic, there is also a Member’s Showcase where you can post pictures of your own work just to show it off!  Maybe you’ll find some carpentry projects to show off this month!

RG Toolbox
In order to do all this carpentry work, you’re going to need some tools.  I find that many folks are willing to buy the tools to do the job, but just don’t know where to start or what to buy.  As we get in-depth on some of these skill areas, I’m going to go into my tool-box and give you a few thoughts about the featured precious tool.  Forgive me if it sounds like a love story…

Behold… the Ryobi One+ 18V Cordless Drill and Flashlight!  Aren’t they beautiful?  These are particularly special because they have the Lithium-Ion batteries which makes a huge difference that I can’t over-emphasize!

I really recommend this as one of the first tools you would buy.  A good cordless drill is really important and you’ll use it on every project.

This particular set is available factory reconditioned from Amazon.com for an incredible price of only $127.99.

I’ve considered buying it just for the spare batteries because they cost $90 each and this comes with two!  But they work so well I really don’t need a spare.  I could use a spare drill though…
