Basement Egress Wells – Safety and Beauty

by Tim on May 28, 2009

I’m a Florida Boy, born and raised in the Sunshine State. For Florida contractors the words “basement” and “swimming pool” are the same. But I know that’s not true for most of you who read this blog. I envy the extra space you have, if not the icy winter mornings.

So I wanted to highlight a cool product here at RG:Select that you basement folks might find interesting.

This is a basement egress system from Wellcraft Egress Systems. Systems like these are a great way to bring natural light into your basement, but also meet important life-safety codes for emergency egress. That word, egress, always bugged me…why don’t we just say ESCAPE? That’s what we mean, right?

So yes, emergency escape, in the event of a fire or any circumstance that blocks the use of the exit stairs, you can just cilmb out the window.

The installation of these modular systems seems pretty straightforward. Putting a window in where you don’t already have one, on the other hand, could be the job for a professional. That depends on how comfortable you are with concrete and masonry work. Cutting into your foundation walls is a job that would normally require an engineers approval, or it would be here, in Florida, if we had basements!
